Quality bobwhite habitat consists of a patchy groundcover mosaic of native grasses, legumes and wildflowers, and shrub or briar thickets.

Native grasses provide vital nesting habitat, legumes and wildflowers provide food resources in the form of seeds and insects, and shrubs and briars provide both thermal and protective cover.

This crucial mix can be found in a variety of habitat types including pine woodland, oak savanna, dry prairie, wet meadow, old field, or in conservation-oriented agriculture fields. These habitats all include early successional habitat and depend on periodic disturbance (prescribed fire/mechanical/chemical) to prevent time and ecological succession from degrading their quality.
